Isolation of Toxic Marine Cyanobacteria and Detection of Microcystins in Thermaikos Gulf in Central Macedonia in Greece

چکیده
The presence of toxic marine cyanobacteria and secondary metabolites, microcystins, were studied in Thermaikos Gulf in Central Macedonia in Greece, during the period from March 2013 to March 2014. Toxic marine cyanobacteria were isolated in marine agar and identified with PCR using primers based on 16S rDNA. The presence of microcystins in water extraction was detected by immunoassay (competitive ELISA). The concentration was ranged from 0.15 to 5ppm. It was observed that populations of toxic marine cyanobacteria were increasing during spring and early winter and there was a correlation to the physical and chemical parameters of the water. The percentage of microcystins was 20.8 % and there were significant differences (p<0.05) between the areas and the seasons.

Direct evidence for production of microcystins by Anabaena strains from the Baltic Sea.
Anabaena is a filamentous, N(2)-fixing, and morphologically diverse genus of cyanobacteria found in freshwater and brackish water environments worldwide. It contributes to the formation of toxic blooms in freshwater bodies through the production of a range of hepatotoxins or neurotoxins. In the Baltic Sea, Anabaena spp. form late summer blooms, together with Nodularia spumigena and Aphanizomeno...

Concentrations of the principal organochlorine insecticides were determined in eggs and freshly dead chicks of the Squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax), as well as in frogs (Rana sp.), the main heron prey. Material was collected from the wetlands of the Thermaikos Gulf (Macedonia, northern Greece) in 1992 and 1993. Residues o...

Eight marine cyanobacteria strains of the genera Cyanobium, Leptolyngbya, Oscillatoria, Phormidium, and Synechococcus were isolated from rocky beaches along the Atlantic Portuguese central coast and tested for ecotoxicity. Strains were identified by morphological characteristics and by the amplification and sequentiation of the 16S rDNA. Bioactivity of dichloromethane, methanol and aqueous extr...

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), Microcystis aeruginosa sp., were isolated from a massive bloom in a eutrophic waterbody in Hungary. Their toxic effect, determined by a mouse test, was associated with the occurrence of microcystins YR and LR which were isolated, separated by means of HPLC procedures and identified by mass spectroscopy. The toxin content of the dry cell material is about 0.22 %...
متن کاملDetection of Plasmids in Heavy Metal Resistance Bacteria Isolated from the Persian Gulf and Enclosed Industrial Areas
Several heavy metal resistant bacterial strains were isolated from sediment and water samples collected from the Persian Gulf and enclosed industrial areas. All the isolated bacteria were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Isolated bacteria were tested for the presence of plasmids using the modified alkaline lysate method. The method was effective for identification and characterization of...
